I've been following you for a long time and only just realised your username is "va-spider". In my head I've been pronouncing it "vah-spee-der".

I have no idea why, and now I inflict this knowledge upon you

vaspider answered:

if it helps, you’re not the first person to pronounce it that way :)

vaspider

to be clear, the name is pronounced vee-aye-spider.

If you are pronouncing the name another way, it is wrong.

Huh, cool. I'd assumed it was for the state of Virginia, but it not being Virginia makes comparatively more sense with the moose avatar.

vaspider

I mean we don't really have moose in Oregon or PA either. I have a moose avatar bc I told a story about @urbanprole getting chased by a moose when she was a kid and it included the words in my icon, and someone made this for me, and now even though I no longer ID as bi, I think if I changed my icon people would get REALLY confused.

demongirlgarlicbread

IIRC official lore is that it's the moose that's bi, so it's all alright in the end

vaspider

My... my icon has lore?

Anonymous asked:

is it conspiracy brained to think that tumblr's icon being period tracker core for longer than any other design + trans selfies being flagged and kept flagged through appeals + the harry potter staff blog incident point towards terfs having influence on tumblr internally. like staff has always been technically less than competent but if it's also infected with ideology as violent as terfs... idk....

cryptotheism answered:

Yes that is genuinely deeply conspiracy brained.

jv

Ok see, I'm no longer staff so I've no reason to defend the company: while I was there, not only I haven't seen anyone talking about any issue in any way that could make me think they were TERFs, but the opposite. On top of that, there is a very significant percentage of people in staff that is trans or gender-queer. Like, a percentage significantly higher than any other company I've worked for. As far as I know, over my three years at Tumblr, there has been zero institutional transphobia there.

Now, what I think it happens is that TERFs weaponize the established systems and procedures. If you report EVERY POST made by a trans person, that will end with a significantly higher ratio of bans on the trans community just by pure statistics. And the fact that Tumblr's ToS team is tiny and continually overloaded means that things like appeals not always work as they should, nor that they have the capacity to approach this abuse by evil actors.

jackie-of-all-spades

Hmm maybe, just maybe... having restrictions on what kind of "sexual content" can be shown is a stupid as fuck idea for a company that can't afford a sizeable mod team to police that content.... and that MAYBE when it comes to sex... they should.... idk... maybe listen to something you've said before and let us... idk.... go nuts.... and idk..... show nuts? Something like that?

jv

Ok, let's see.

You can remove the sex content limits, ok, but payment processor issues aside, you lose all the iphone traffic overnight. "But Twitter yadda yadda". Let's remember this is not speculation, this has happened in the past. Why apple let Twitter on the app store even if they break their rules? No idea. The same reason they let them change the name of the app to X even if the app store rules force a minimum of 2 letters for app names I guess.

So yeah, you go show nuts again and you lose, let's say, 1/3rd of the users. And hey, yeah, Tumblr is not making money with ads, but still, ads are the most important source of revenue by far. You remove 1/3rd of that and .. well, yeah, Tumblr wouldn't last long. The only reason Tumblr can still exist is staff slowly chipping away the yearly loses, so they can convince the money people the money flow may be positive at some point, so they keep the $ faucet open. If the line starts going in the other direction, the faucet will close and sayonara you weeaboo shits etc etc

jackie-of-all-spades

Well I'm not entirely sure I buy the difference to income would be that large, but I'll buy it since you have some measure of 1st person account on that.

So let's assume the goal should be to maximize expression and freedom while not reducing the potential income.

I can't confirm this because I'm on samsung, but I expect reddit is available on iPhone right? Which has full porn communities, so I assume either Apple tos allows adult content if it's marked or that the Apple version doesn't show that content right? So then the question would be why not do that here? We have tags and the mature filter. Why not make the function of a flag just to mark it mature if skin is showing instead of nuking that content for not being marked, which seems to be what happens now.

vaspider

I think you're probably missing the "Apple seems to let The Big Guys get away with things The Little Guys can't" which was pretty strongly stated in @jv 's previous comment.

The rules are literally not enforced the same for Tumblr vs Reddit/X/etc.

traycakes

If you couldn't use the twitter or reddit app on iPhone, a significant number of people would choose to buy android phones instead. Enforcing the rules against apps that popular would cost apple money.

It's unlikely the same is true of tumblr. It has a much smaller user base, and users are less likely to be addicted to doomscrolling on their phone like with twitter so not having a dedicated app might not be a dealbreaker. That means Tumblr has to actually follow the rules, which apple made clear years ago when tumblr had a much larger user base.

Also there doesn't need to be a secret TERF conspiracy at Tumblr because there are open, well documented TERF conspiracies to mass report every trans post that are organized on places like mumsnet. All that Tumblr needs to do is be cheap so they use a crappy algorithm to do all their moderation (including appeals) even though they know that's easy to abuse.

jenroses

Dedicated apps were a mistake.

One of the reasons ao3 can be ao3 is that it doesn't have an app and just runs in the browser.

A fave of mine was always the american tales where people freaked out because ‘someone died in this house’ and all the europeans would go ‘…Yes? That would be pretty much every house over 40 years old.’

‘…My school is older than your entire town.’

‘Sorry, you think *how far* is okay to travel for a shopping trip?’

*American looks up at the beams in a country pub* ‘Uh, this place has woodworm, isn’t that a bit unsafe?’ ‘Eh, the woodworm’s 400 years old, it’s holding those beams together.’

A few years ago when I was in college I did a summer program at Cambridge aimed specifically at Americans and Canadians, and my year it was all Americans and one Australian.  We ended the program with a week in Wessex, and on the last day as we all piled onto the bus in Salisbury (or Bath? I can’t remember), the professors went to the front to warn us that we wouldn’t be making any stops unless absolutely necessary.  We’re headed to Heathrow to drop off anyone flying off the same day, then back to Cambridge.

“All right, it’s going to be a long bus ride, so make sure you’re prepared for that.”

We all brace ourselves.  A long bus ride?  How long?  We’re Americans; a long bus ride for us is a minimum of six hours with the double digits perfectly plausible.  We can handle a twelve hour bus ride as long as we get a bathroom break.

The answer.  “Two hours.”

Oh.

a tour guide in France told my school group that a particular cathedral wouldn’t interest us much because “it’s not very old; only from the early 1600s”

to which we had to respond that it was still older than the oldest surviving European-style buildings in our country

iguana-sneeze

China is both old and big. I had some Chinese colleagues over; we were discussing whether they wanted to see the Vasa ship (hugely expensive war ship which sank on it’s maiden voyage after 12 min). They asked if it was old, I said “not THAT old” (bearing in mind they were Chinese) “it’s from the 1500s.” To my surprise they still looked impressed, nodding enthusiatically. Then I realised I’d forgotten something: “…I mean it’s from the 1500s AFTER the birth of Christ” and they went “oh, AFTER…”.

European problems include:

- Missing a turn and now you need to cross the border;

- Towns built 500 to 800 years ago with really small roads where cars can barely fit;

- That road/parking lot/etc they were building is gonna take twice the time to finish because they found Roman ruins AGAIN!

I love this post but also hate it because people never acknowledge the structures of native and indigenous people in America and Canada. We literally have pyramids here in Illinois that are thousands of years old.

There is stuff here from the Aztecs, but since it wasn’t made by settlers people think that America is only as old as when Europeans came over.

The population that got wiped out and displaced by Europeans is still here and needs to be acknowledged. America and Canada aren’t “young” and have more history than most ppl acknowledge.

To be clear - I don’t have any issue with OP’s statement (or even any of the reblogs). Im just cranky at the US educational system. And boomers, a little.

Actors on Strike

I don't think a lot of people have given much consideration to the issues that people have with their images being scanned and then used later in AI without further permission or compensation.

Consider that anyone anywhere in any film at any time could be reused without notice in the most disturbing porn imaginable. Do you honestly think these images won't be licensed and sublicensed and used to train AI engines? And because you signed a contract, that would be legal?

Think about how you'd feel if you were an extra on some film set, you made $100, and the next thing you know a studio sells a set of image contracts the way people sell kitbashing image packs.

Because that's what's coming.

If companies can license creator's works and figure out ways not to pay them, and the works can end up completely bastardized in ways the original creator would never predict or want, imagine what these studios are going to do to your face and body.
